CORRECTION: Rick Pitino Ruins Colored Blazer Trend Forever

Posted by Mike on February 10, 2008

See if you can tell the difference…

And…

Yeesh. And you thought Bob Huggins was tacky. But the color is not why he ruined the trend forever. It’s because he abandoned it in the second half, and Louisville came back to pull the upset of #6 Georgetown. Coaches, being the superstitious types, could see this as a sign that the basketball gods are not happy with colored blazers. Oh well, ii was fun while it lasted. Plaid it is then!

What to Watch: College Football Week 9

Posted by Mike on October 27, 2007

The last week or so has been extremely hectic (college midterms)…long story short, Digital Headbutt is back. On to this weeks College Football games:

#7 West Virginia at Rutgers (12:00 ET, ESPN): We haven’t heard much from Morgantown since their loss to South Florida, but they may be creeped their way back into the Big East and BCS discussions–if for no other reason than they haven’t lost since. Well, now they can hide no more. West Virginia, Rutgers welcomes you back to the boathouse. MAO!

North Carolina at Wake Forest (12:00 ET, Raycom/LF): Wake Forest has surprisingly done well enough so far this season  to have a decent chance at defending last year’s surprise ACC title.  UNC, meanwhile, is a 2-5 (1-2 ACC) team that’s thisclose to being a 6-1 (3-0) team. The Heels are coming off a bye week and the toughest part of their schedule, and this game should be much more manageable for UNC. As always, the live blog is on Tar Heel Mania.

#12 USC at #5 Oregon (3:00 ET, FSN): So Oregon, have you been sitting back, laughing as USC and Cal have played themselves out of the Championship picture? Now it’s your turn.

#10 South Florida at #23 UConn (3:30 ET, ABC): If you had told a college football aficionado five to ten years ago that a game between South Florida and Connecticut would be playing as top 25 teams in game that could very well determine the championship in a BCS conference…well, you’d probably be watching this game in a strait jacket.

#11 Florida vs. #18 Georgia (3:30 ET, CBS): In the crowded SEC East Standings, this game is important. For the fans at the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”, drinking is much, much more important.

Nebraska at #19 Texas (3:30 ET, ABC): The Lou Holtz Pep Talk is back…and it is glorious.

saturday-lou-fever.jpg

#9 Kansas at Texas A&M (7:00 ET, ESPN2): I smell an upset. Kansas’ schedule has been very easy so far, and Dennis Franchione has been backed into a corner, needing quality wins at the end of the season to help save his job.

#1 Ohio State at Penn State (8:00 ET, ABC): Ah, yes. Ohio State has had it way, way too easy so far. Tonight, against the Nittany Lions, we will get so see how good they really are. MAO!

#21 Cal at #4 Arizona State (10:15 ET, FSN): Much like Ohio State and Boston College, Arizona is arguably undefeated because they haven’t faced the tough opponents on our schedule this year. The Golden Bears are reeling, having lost their last two conference games to inferior opponents. We’ll se if they can step up today, and create even more chaos in the race to the BCS championship.

That’s 13 hours of great college football today….you’ll get exhausted just watching.

What to Watch: College Football Week 7

Posted by Mike on October 13, 2007

#12 Virginia Tech at Duke (12:00 ET, R/LF Sports): Duke has played in several close games, and seem to be due for a win. If there’s anything we can predict about the ACC, it’s that it’s unpredictable. Can Thaddeus Lewis and the Blue Devils pull off a huge upset at home?

HA! Just kidding. They’re gonna get clobbered. But I had you going for a second, didn’t I?

#18 Illinois at Iowa (12:00 ET, ESPN2): I battle any sex or any race, you beatin’ me is like Billy Crystal playin’ Scarface! I can’t see it, I’m blind to the eyes, I came up in your face Oops Pow Surprise! OHHHHHHHH!!!

Illinois will win, unless Iowa’s offense is reminded that the season is underway.

Georgia Tech at Miami (12:00 ET, ESPN): Tech has been very disappointing, with 3 conference losses already. But that doesn;t mena they can upset the Hurricanes and throw yet another wrench into the clusterf— that is the ACC.

#7 South Carolina at North Carolina (3:30 ET, ABC): As always, the live blog is on Tar Heel Mania. Seemingly every big team has been the recipient of an upset, except for South Carolina. Everyevery little team has had a chance at the big upset, except for North Carolina. The time has come.

#1 LSU at #17 Kentucky (3:30 ET, CBS): Kentucky’s biggest game of the year, while a loss for LSU (as predicted by the Lou Holtz pep talk) would make the BCS picture even murkier. This is almost certainly the biggest game of the day. You know, in case you aren’t interested in non-conference matchup between two pseudo rivals, one of whom has a losing record.

#4 Boston College at Notre Dame (3:30 ET, NBC): The National Notre Dame Schadenfruede continues…

#11 Missouri at #6 Oklahoma (6:30 ET, FSN): The Tigers have been surprising everyone this year, but they get their biggest test in Norman today. Can Chase Daniel stay out of trouble against the Sooners?

#22 Auburn at Arkansas (7:45 ET, ESPN): Darren McFadden is going to have a big game tonight. He better, or else Houston Nutt will need to text message his letter of resignation on the sideline.

Games To Watch: College Football Week 6

Posted by Mike on October 6, 2007

#5 Wisconsin at Illinois (12:00 ET, ESPN): Despite being the #5 team in the land, the Badgers haven’t looked very impressive this year, and they’re the Vegas underdogs against Zook and the Illini. Can Wisconsin prove their skeptics wrong?

Kansas at #24 Kansas State (12:00 ET, FSN): It’s the Battle for the Governor’s Cup (aka the Sunflower Showdown), and for the first time in recent memory, both teams are good heading into this matchup. It’s “GET IN MY BELLY!”…

…versus the Power Towels. Who ya got?

Miami at North Carolina (12:00 ET, ESPN2): UNC comes home after a road trip against two ranked opponents, and the next two home game’s aren’t any easier. But the Hurricanes didn’t look too impressive against Duke, and UNC pulled the miracle upset against a top 5 Miami team the last time they came to Chapel Hill. A  s always, the live blog is at Tar Heel Mania.

#10 Oklahoma vs. #19 Texas (3:30 ET, ABC): One week ago this might have been the week’s premier game, between two top 10, undefeated conference opponents in one of the nation’s biggest rivalry. Unfortunately for them, Kansas State and Colorado spoiled that party. Well, at least there’s always the artery-clogging experience that is the Texas State Fair. Seriously, they found a way to fry soft drinks!

deep_fried_coke.jpg

#12 Georgia at Tennessee (3:30 ET, CBS): Without a successful season, Phil Fulmer could be in serious trouble in Knoxville. In the way of a win today is the Bulldogs, who are a staggering 23-3 on the road in SEC play under Mark Richt.

#15 Virginia Tech at #22 Clemson (6:00 ET, ESPN): Past history says that this is the kind of game that Clemson will lose. Can Tommy Bowden’s team change the status quo against the Hokies’ tough defense?

#4 Ohio State at #23 Purdue (8:00 ET, ABC): Both teams are undefeated, but neither have really been challenged this season. Now is the time for them to prove whether or not they are true contender.

#20 Cincinatti at #21 Rutgers (8:00 ET, ESPN2): Of all the BCS teams in the top 25, the Bearcats probably have to be the biggest surprise. At 5-0, they face a Rutgers team reeling from a loss to Maryland last week, and looking for revenge after Cincy dashed their conference title hopes last year.

#8 Florida at #1 LSU (8:00 ET, CBS): The big matchup of the week, possibly the entire year. Even though Florida lost to Auburn last week, they’re right back in the title hunt with a win in Death Valley. But can anyone beat the Tigers right now?

Needless to say, today will be a great day in college football.

Games To Watch: College Football Week 4

Posted by Mike on September 22, 2007

  • UNC at #23 USF (12 ET, ESPN): I’ll be live-blogging this game over at Tar Heel Mania. This game features two of the NCAA’s best underclassman Quarterbacks, UNC’s T.J. Yates and USF’s Matt Grothe.
  • #3 Florida at Ole Miss (12:30 ET): You might think that Florida will blow away the Rebels, but Ed Orgeron has the perfect game plan this week.
  • #12 South Carolina at #2 LSU (3:30 ET, CBS): Steve Spurrier. Les Miles. Hilarity, and great football, shall ensue.
  • #10 Penn State at Michigan (3:30 ET, ABC): For the Wolverines, the real season is about to begin. They’ve got a chip on their shoulder, and the Nittany Lions haven’t played anyone. But I have a question for Michigan: What kind of freaky stuff between the sheets do you have to do with NCAA President Myles Brand to play your first four games at home and eight home games in a season?
  • #21 Kentucky at Arkansas (6 ET, ESPN2): For Arkansas, they’re in desperate need for a marquee win after their offseason turmoil. For Kentucky…holy crap, Kentucky is ranked?

Games To Watch, College Football Week 3

Posted by Mike on September 15, 2007

Virginia at UNC, 12:00 ET, LF/Raycom: I’ll be live blogging this game at Tar Heel Mania. How will the Heels respond in their conference opener?

#22 Tennessee vs. #5 Florida, 3:30 ET, CBS: This is what college football is really about: the big-time rivalries. We get our first true rivalry of the season.

#10 Ohio State vs. Washington, 3:30 ET, ESPN: Can Washington pull off the upset? The long answer: maybe. The short answer: no.

#1 USC vs. Nebraska, 8:00 ET, ABC: The Trojans get their first true test, and Nebraska gets a chance to prove, once and for all, if they’re back to being a national power.

#21 Boston College at #15 Georgia Tech, 8:00 ET, ESPN: A big ACC game, Matt Ryan will be pressured early and often against Jon Tenuta and the Georgia Tech defense. If the Heels managed to keep Tenuta as defensive coordinator, John Bunting might still have a job.

Toledo vs, Kansas, 7:00 ET: “The lard bowl”. The only reason to watch this game is for the ultimate, to the death sumo wrestling match between Tom Amstutz and Mark Mangino at halftime.
