The Games To Watch Today: September 1st, 2007

Posted by Mike on September 1, 2007

These are the games I’m keeping track of today:

Appalachian State at #5 Michigan, 12:00 ET, Big Ten Network

The Two-time defending Division 1 FCS Champion Mountaineers will start the season in front of the biggest crowd that they will ever see live, when they play Michigan in the Big House. It will be interesting to see how they match up against a BCS power, especially if the Wolverines stumble out of the gate. It could be the upset of the century.

But I’m not looking for a good matchup. This could be the single funniest game of the year. Every day leading into this season, I’ve that the Michigan band will play the single worst college promotional song in history:

If there is a God, they’re going to play HOT HOT HOT at halftime. And someone with a camcorder is going to record it and put it on YouTube.

The Hilarity will go through the roof with the presence of a certain offensive lineman’s pet.

Wake Forest at Boston College, 3:30 ET, ABC

If you had thought last year that the 2007 opener between Wake Forest and a Boston College team without Tom O’Brien, your brain is lying. Can Wake Forest repeat its cinderella season? They now have an experienced quarter back in Riley Skinner, and Micah Andrews is coming back from injury. However, they lose a lot of experience from last year, especially on defense. More importantly, the Deacons no longer have the element of surprise by their side; they have a big target on their backs. How they handle it will determine their fate this season.

As for Boston College, can new coach Jeff Jagodzinski pick up where O’Brien left off?

#15 Tennessee at #12 California, 8:00 ET, ABC

California got embarrassed last year in Knoxville, ending any national championship aspirations they had as a top 10 team. This year in Berkeley, they will have their chance at revenge. If either teams has national title aspirations, this is a must-win game.

The Game I’m Going to Watch: James Madison at North Carolina, 6:00 ET, ESPN 360

You know damn well why.
