UNC will be playing at 1pm today with chance to win their 5th ACC Baseball Tournament Championship. Alex White had an unbelievable game on the mound yesterday, allowing only two hits in seven shutout innings, and led the Tar Heels to a 4-0 win over Virginia and a berth in the Championship, their first appearance since 1990. By virtue of a win over Miami, Wake Forest will be UNC opponent this afternoon. I’ll be live blogging the game on Tar Heel Mania. So…see you there!

Tonight Virginia Tech finally begins play in the ACC Tournament, as they play Wake Forest in Game #8 of my attempt to live-blog the entire ACC Tournament, a clear sign to you the I have too much time on my hands. Luckily, I live in ACC country, and the universities coincide spring break with the tourney. I’ve also gotten some help from the Extrapolater. So there.

9:41 pm: 2-0, Wake. Kyle Visser get the first basket on a putback. He’s a huge mismatch for the Hokies, who will have Coleman Collins defending him.
9:42 pm: 2-2. Tech steals the ball from the backcourt, and that dunk was WAY too easy for Jamon Gordon.
9:43 pm: 7-2, VT. The Hokies are shooting almost indiscriminately. You’re allowed to do that if your guards can pick the opponent’s pockets clean. Vasallo hits an open three, and Dowdell commits highway robbery on the inbound, which results in an easy layup.
9:45 pm: 9-2, VT. Carolina has a very deep bench, and they try to take advantage of this by playing at as fast a tempo as possible. Virginia Tech swept us because they’re one of the few teams that can keep up.
9:47 pm: 11-4, VT. Seriously, Raycom, stop it. It’s bad enough to see these coaches, but to show closeups of them in HD? HHUUUOOOAAGGHH!!!!
9:48 pm: 13-6, VT. L.D. Williams finally breaks the Wake drought. But the Hokies’ offense cannot be stopped right now.
9:49 pm: The NBA needs more players like Jamon Gordon. He absolutely disrupts your entire gameplan. Skip Prosser needs to find a way to neutralize his defense.
9:52 pm: The Wake Fores band has a really, really bad sense of timing. That’s the second time this tournament I’ve seen their fight song interrupted by game play.
9:53 pm: 18-8, VT. The Deacons have a deep bench with athletic players. So why do they always seem a step behind the Hokies tonight?
9:55 pm: 18-12, VT. Ishmael Smith is trying to bring Wake back into this game.
Mike Gminski: “[Skip Prosser]‘s gonna work up a good lather by halftime.” Wait…what??? I think he meant sweat, but that sentence doesn’t make any sense at all. And frankly, it sounds pretty creepy.
9:59 pm: There’s one thing Gordon can’t do: make free throws.
10:00 pm: 18-14, VT. Visser take s great pass from Smith and dunks it. It’s simply amazing that I’ve already lost count of how many steals the Hokies have, and yet the Deacons have the momentum and are still very much in this game.
10:02 pm: 20-17, VT. There’s this one guy named Anthony, he plays for Wake, and apparently he’s very, very Gurley. Ladies and Gentleman, the worst joke of all time! Thank you!
10:02 pm: 24-19, VT. The Hokies are really attacking the inside. You think that Visser would do more to stop their attacking, especially if he’s expected to be an NBA lottery pick.
10:07 pm: Okay, I’ve seen this Chrysler minivan ad about 50 times during the tournament, and that couple would not be caught dead in any combination of a Chrysler or a minivan.
10:09 pm: 25-21, VT. Wake is within four, now getting some help from Jamie AHHHH! SKEEN SKEEN SKEEN SKEEN SKEEN!
10:11 pm: 25-23, VT. Ah, crap. Every time a coach calls a timeout, the announcers show a quick Charles Schwab ad, and suddenly I’m thinking about stocks.
10:12 pm: 27-23, VT. A.D. Vasallo is a reliable go-to guy for the Hokies. Why aren’t there more Puerto Ricans in college basketball?
10:14 pm: 29-23, VT. Dan Rather has had some success with obscure analogies, so I think I’ll try one as we approach 3 minutes before halftime. Virginia Tech has owned the paint like the Yakuza own a Japanese Pachinko parlor.
10:18 pm: 31-25, VT. Dowdell just hit a nice midrange jumper from the free throw line. Offensively, I haven’t heard as much from Dowdell as I thought I would.
10:19 pm: 31-27, VT. Visser’s free throw shooting is keeping them within reach.
10:20 pm: 31-29, VT. With less than two minutes before halftime, Visser makes a tough basket inside, and Wake draws an offensive foul from Dowdell.
10:21 pm: 34-32, Wake. The Deacons take the lead thanks to a three by Ishmael Smith, but A.D. Vasallo immediately strikes back. One minute left.
10:24 pm: Jamon Gordon hits his free throws, but L.D. Williams hits a jumpshot before the end of the half. Virginia Tech leads 36-34 at halftime. Early, I thought that the Hokies were going to run away with this game, as they dictated the pace of the game and seemed to steal from Wake’s guards with ease. The Deacs survived the initial flurry, however, and have played very well since. For them to win this game, they will likely need to endure another flurry in the second half, control the ball, and shut down the paint on defense.
10:31 pm: Is there any scientific proof that these ads for beer and soft drinks actually make people want to have said beer/soft drinks? Because it doesn’t matter what the ratio is of commercials of Bud Light to Miller Lite to Pepsi to Coke, I’m not drinking any on it.
10:38 pm: Seth Greenberg invariably says “ahright?” twice for every sentence he makes.
10:42 pm: The ACC Tournament knows their audience. Evey ad during the tourney pertains to either cars or ingesting calories. It’s actually quite refreshing now to go an entire day without being asked to take a pill by my TV.
10:44 pm: 38-35, VT. The second half has started out slow. So slow, in fact, that Raycom didn’t show the first 30 seconds. A.D. Vasallo scores first for the Hokies, but Dowdell is on the bench with four fouls.
10:46 pm: 40-37, VT. The Hokies still don’t have an answer for Kyle Visser.
10:47 pm: How does Ishmael Smith miss that layup? In a game this close you can;t afford to miss those opportunities.
10:48 pm: 41-37, VT. Deron Washington only has 3 so far in this game. No one can deny, However, that he has the best hairdo still active in this tournament now that Osby and Maryland have been eliminated.
10:50 pm: 43-37, VT. Normally Dowdell is the game changer for Virginia Tech, but if the Hokies are going to pull away for the win tonight it will be because of Jamon Gordon.
10:55 pm: 47-37, VT. Gordon steals again, and Deron Washington gets the dunk. Prosser, sensing the momentum change, calls a timeout.
10:57 pm: 47-40, VT. Visser is trying to keep the Deacons in this game, but the difference so far has been that Virginia Tech has 14 more points off turnovers than Wake.
11:01 pm: 49-42, VT. Virginia Tech seems to be winning the rebounding battle right now.
Wow. That rim is loud. I bet you can hear the balls clang off the rim in the St. Pete Times Forum from Orlando.
11:06 pm: 55-42, VT. Wake’s David Weaver is pretty useless. Virginia Tech’s Deron Washington is decidedly not.
11:10 pm: 59-42, VT. The Hokies are robbing Wake blind now that Dowdell, Gordon and Washington are all clicking at the same time.
I don’t Wake can come back from this one. The bad news is that we get our first truly uninteresting game. The good news is that I won’t have to stay up until a God-awful hour.
11:14 pm: 61-45, VT, 7:45 left. I haven’t heard from Harvey Hale at all tonight. God must think he’s a very gullible man.
11:19 pm: 63-47, VT, 6:00 left. Wake couldn’t keep the ball away from Virginia Tech right now if they trapped themselves in Hunter S. Thompson’s panic room. That’s how well the Hokies are taking the ball away.
11:24 pm: Another reason why holding the ACC Tournament in Tampa was a bad idea: in Greensboro, there’s no golf to preempt a basketball game. A.D. Vasallo hits another three to make it 68-47, VT.
11:28 pm: Visser just stepped off the court for the final time in a Wake uniform. Show your respect.
11:29 pm: Raycom just showed two fans to the Hokie Pokey. Now that I didn’t need to see.
11:30 pm: Just as I type that, WRAL Raleigh loses the feed to Tampa. I have the voodoo blog!
11:32 pm: The game mercifully ends, as Virginia Tech wins 71-52. Wake gave a valiant effort tonight, but the sly Virginia Tech backcourt picked the pockets of the inexperienced Deacons and put the game out of reach. Ironically, tomorrow in the Wolfpack they will face the only team that swept them in the regular season. I just hope the final three games will be as exciting as the first two days of action. Now that I’ve survived the first two days, it looks like I’ll be able to pull off having a live blog of the entire ACC Tournament. But I’ll be running on fumes by Sunday. Many thanks to the Extrapolater for helping me out. I might have jinxed the Cavaliers by having him live blog the game and.

This is just to let you know that today I’m going to live North Carolina vs. Florida State at noon today on Tar Heel Mania as game 5 of my attempt to have a live blog of every ACC Tournament game. Yesterday was one of the most exciting days, if not the most exciting day I’ve seen at the ACC Tournament as far as I can remember. That probably means that today’s games are going to be a bunch of blowouts, but I’m hopeful that today’s matchups will be very entertaining and exciting. Except, of course, for this game. I hope Carolina blows Florida State out the sky.

So G Tech gets to wear the White with Old Gold accents as the putative home team (higher record, higher seed), and Wake is in Black with Old Gold accents. I feel like I should be polishing furniture.
Tech controls the tip and Crit takes it to the hoop immediately.
9:51 It’s two all after a Williams dunk gets Wake on the board.
Ishmael Smith misses both foul shots for Wake.
Crittenton takes it straight down the court and scores again.
4-2 Georgia Tech
9:52 Smith heads into the paint and commits the charge to turn the ball over.
10:40 Tupac Shakur shooting two for the Deacs.
Wakes ball handling leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of bobbles. Williams knocks in a three after all of the hot-potato.
5-4 Wake
9:55 Mike congratulates me on being freed from Billy Packer. It’s nice to have the option of watching the game on your local Raycom station.
Crittenton misses the shot but Smith slams it home trailing the play.
Visser makes a nice move to get the ball inside against the double team and scores.

10:00 So, if Wake pulls off an upset, all lower seeds will have advanced in the tourney’s first day. That would bode well for the top seeds, one would think.
Some really crisp passing by Gtech leads to an easy bucket by Dickey.
Tech steals the ball but travels.
As often as Tech has had the ball over the past 3 minutes, you’d really think they’d have scored again, but they give the ball up and Weaver scores it for Wake.

10:05 Visser pounds in another one and Wake goes on top by two.
10:08 After a time out, we’re back. Tech is pressuring the ball slightly as it comes up the floor, which I find interesting this early in the game. Will that make them tired?
Still 13-11 Wake. Lots of missed shots (nice *doink* sound on the Tampa rim), turnovers, and offensive inefficiency.
10:11 Tech finally bangs one home after it hits every angle on the rim (doink, doink, doink, swish) and we’re tied at 13.
Wake can’t score without Visser in there. Tech doesn’t respect any part of their game without the big man as a threat.
And Visser knots it at 15 just to prove my point. Smith has been doing a great job of finding him at the right moment.

Visser rejects Crit and it goes back the other way for a Drum three, but Morral answers and keeps it close at 18-17 Wake.
10:15 Man, I can’t tell if the rims are really loud or the crowd is just really quiet, but I’m hearing the bricks loud and clear.
Smith (tech) takes an alley and oops the hell out of it. AND THE FOUL!
Jeremis misses the foul shot but Tech rebounds. Visser goes down and the ball is given to Wake.
19-18 Tech Weaver for Wake has two fouls. Timeout.
10:20 Wow, lots of empty seats on the overhead angle. I think I’d move down if I were that guy in the nosebleeds.

West hoists a desperation shot to beat the clock and it swishes to put Tech up 23-20.
Crittenton comes back in the game and pulls a sick spin move to score – he has six.
Tech 25, Wake 22 – Visser gets a free throw to go with yet another inside bucket.
at 10:25 we have a clock controversy – the officials failed to start the clock during the last Tech posession.
Visser is wandering around waiting for the clock stuff to be resolved. Nothing says ACC action like watching the clock operator scratch his head and poke buttons
We have 6:15 left on the clock (give or take) and we’re finally back on with Visser on the line.
Tech 27, Wake 23 Visser took a seat after making the free throw, not sure why – he just had a five minute rest while the clock was being reset.
10:30 Forgot to mention my commentators are Steve Martin & Mike Giminski. Wonder if Awful Announcing has anything to say about those guys?

10:40 Two minutes left in the first half. Neither Visser or Weaver has missed a shot all night, and Wake is still down two.

Wow, lots of free throws tonight.
Tech steals the ball but commits an offensive foul on the break. Another steal by Tech. Now there’s a travel. Wow, somebody please put together an offensive series here.
10:45 Wake on the line, Dukes hits one to make it 33-30 for Tech.
Scramble for the ball as it’s poked away, and Wake ends up with the ball out of bounds.
Wow… a whole ‘nother half of this. Don’t pity me, I volunteered.
Tech scores and then steals the ball and scores again to create more action in the last 16 seconds than has happened in the preceding 6 minutes.

38-33 Tech Jeramis Smith fouls Drum and bails him out of a shot clock situation.Drum makes both to get us to 38-35.
Thad Young strokes a three and puts Tech up six.
Wake’s PF (I like to call him “guy with braids”) knocks down an answering three.Visser goes inside again to get to 13 points on the night.
41-40 Tech – a sudden flurry from Wake brings about a timeout.
17:42 (eternity minus one) left in the second half. Dickey cuts Visser nigh in twain.Visser misses the first -throw. and the second. Yikes.
It stays 41-40 for Tech until Young puts down a trey and it’s back to a 4 point Tech lead.
Dickey gets his third in the Hack-A-Visser defense. Time to sit down.
16:20 left Visser shows nice hands picking up a loose ball and scores in close.
44-42 Tech – much more of a ballgame going on now.
They’ve got to quit showing the overhead of the building – it’s like watching your grandfather go bald as the seats get emptier and emptier.
Tech free throws make it 46-42 in Tech’s favor.
Young bangs in another three and our announcers break out the old chestnut “He’s not a freshman any more”.

I just zoned out wondering if this would be a better football game than a basketball game and somewhere in there Tech made it 51-48.
12:00 My wife just came in and talked to me, so I’m going to have to back up the DVR to give you a score update: 54-50 Tech. Fortunately, backing up the telecast allows me to skip the Carlos Mencia commercial.

Only five minutes left – Drum fouls a three-point attempt by Young, so Young has to take his three in sections.
Dangerous pass stolen by Wake’s Williams who starts the break, but it ends in a Tech foul.

Even as empty as the Tampa venue is right now, there are still more spectators than there were at the Sun Belt tourney.
OK, the color commentator just echoed my thoughts – he actually called the game “excruciating, with no flow and too many fouls”. Ouch, dude.
Wake is up 74-68 but Smith has to deal with a cramp after he scores.
Foul on a three-pointer that goes in and Tech cuts the lead to three with a chance to make it two when we come back from the commercial.
3:11 left, and it’s 74-72 Wake. Skip Prosser is calving.

Wake brings the ball up the court slowly – good to see them not getting rattled by the run.
Young has quietly racked up 29 points in this game, mostly in the second half, and I don’t imagine he’s done yet.
Ishmael Smith hits a three to make it 77-74 Wake and Tech commits an offensive foul on the ensuing posession.
2:06 left and Wake has a chance to go under 2 minutes with the ball and a lead.
Smith takes and makes another one – he has 10 pts and 12 assists – incredible!
I guess I was wrong earlier – Visser has been taken away in the second half and Smith has filled in very well for him.
1:05 left and Smith hits two free throws to make it Wake 80, Tech 76.
Tech misses a couple of chances, and two players crash into the stands and are very slow to get up.
L. D. Williams is still down for Wake but Tech’s Smith gets up.
With 45 ticks left, Williams is up, but looks like his wrist is hurt, probably from trying to catch himself as Smith fell on top of him. Gminski says “That’s a lot of man on top of you”.
Drum fouls out and puts Tech on the line to chip away at the 80-76 lead.

With a two point lead, Williams can’t get the ball in for Wake and they take a TO
Tech’s Jerimus Smith has fouled out (10pts) and we’re still sitting on roughly 33 seconds.
That hollywood stuff about coaches giving inspirational speeches in the huddle is bogus. The Wake huddle was miced and all I could hear was “OK, who has #10? OK, here we go, here we go!”
Crittenton scores and it’s 81-80 for Wake – tight game! Only 22 secs left.
Who will Tech foul when Wake gets the ball in? I guess that’s why they work so hard on inbounds plays.
It gets inbounds to Skeen, and he gets rocked to go to the line.
If he makes both, Tech can still tie, but they’ll need a three.
He misses one.
He hits the second.
Tech comes up the floor casually and Crittenton scores over Visser and gets the foul.

Wake looks tired coming up and loses the ball.
Tech misses the shot and we’re going to OT.
As I type, Aminu (17pts) goes out for Tech, and the score is 88-87 Tech in OT.
Dickey drops the ball when he has a clear path to the basket – these kids are getting weary.
Wake is up two with 3 mins left in OT.
Tied at 90, Ishmael Smith loses the ball and Crittenton takes his time setting up the offense – he takes it inside from the wing and scores!
92-90 Tech, and Hale answers with a Wake three.
Who would have thought this game could see both teams break 100?
93-92 Wake.1:29 left in OT
Smith loses the ball and Crittenton fouls Harvey Hale as they dive for it.
Morral ties it with a three! 95 all!
49 seconds left in OT and Weaver puts back a Williams miss to put Wake on top (for now).
97-95 Wake.
Tech’s coach just clearly mouthed the words f@#% off! on the sideline. Nice camera work, Raycom!
Visser fouls Dickey and puts him on the line with 13 seconds left.
Dongs the first.
They change the foul to Hale. Big whoop.
Dickey nails the second, but Wake gets the ball with 13 secs and a one-point lead.
Hale gets fouled hard as he receives the ball inbounds.
One thing’s for sure, neither of these teams has given up on their season.

Morrow hits the three. I hope Gminski is wearing his Depends tonight. We’re going to 2OT.

Hmmm… I think I mentoined Clinch as a double-point scorer in my intro. Seems he’s been dismissed from the Tech team. Stupid internet.

I’m coming around to this… I really am. I will be live-blogging the Virginia/NC State game tomorrow night for Digital Headbutt, and I was initially disappointed that Duke didn’t make it, because a UVA/Duke game is the sort of thing that really riles up my fellow Charlottesvilleans. However, Sidney Lowe is starting to charm me. There’s no way he takes off the red jacket now, right? I mean, it’s like Wimp Sanderson’s ugly plaid number at ‘Bama way back when – it’s a signature, and a good luck charm. He’d have to be nuts to leave it at the hotel now.
Tonight I’m going to be combining my Old Gold with my 40 of Old English as I live-blog the Wake Forest/Georgia Tech game. I have to admit I wonder how we’ll definitively tell the two teams’ fans apart. Both list Old Gold as a primary hue in their color scheme, so we’ll have to listen very carefully to tell our Atlantans from our Winston-Salemites, won’t we?
Enough of my japes. The winner of the nightcap gets to move on and face the Virginia Tech Hokies in the next round. Senior Center Kyle Visser is the only Deacon averaging double figures, though I would have to say his reabounding numbers leave much to be desired – only 7 1/2 per game. Georgia Tech has a much more balanced attack, with youngsters Crittenton, Young & Clinch scoring the ball well. (No, I don’t really say that players “score the ball”. Only a highly-paid announcer-type would say something so ridiculous)
